A mountain man can survive anything even a cold day in hell...
Nathaniel Squire is a giant of a man, and the only one Col. Leander Melton thought could lead his pack of greenhorn would-be trappers into the mountains. And deep in Blackfoot territory, Squire must teach the youths to face the ways of survival, the rage of the Blackfeet, the cunning of a traitor — and what it means to be a mountain man.

Winter Rage Mountain Times Book 1 edition by John Legg Literature Fiction eBooks

I have a particular fondness for John Legg's mountain man stories, but Nathan Squire (the protagonist of Winter Rage) has become my new favorite. He's bigger than life, almost reminds me of a Conan the Barbarian archetype, the way he can take an attack un phased and crush bones with his bare hands. He's leading an inexperienced but well-financed trapping expedition into the Rockies, as the experienced guide and expedition leader. The story has twists left and right, from treacherous relations to ... Well, I don't want to give too much a way... Point being, Legg keeps you turning pages and the action keeps coming!

Winter Rage Mountain Times Book 1 edition by John Legg Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great mountain man story. Would highly recommend for western mountain man genre of this time period. Plot driven, exciting style.
I thought the first part of the book was slow, but as it progressed and they got into skirmishes with the Native Americans and other things happened, I really enjoyed it.
Definitely 5 stars. This is the first book I've ever read by this author, John Legg. Great writing style and storyline...one of the best mountain man era books I've ever read. Looking forward to reading the second book in this series.
Although I found the story entertaining, I don’t understand why the author chose to use the the word “g_ _damn” so much to the point that it was extremely excessive. No other profanity, just that one word. It was used numerous times on what seemed like every page. I found it tasteless and it added nothing to the book. An educated person does not have to use that type of language to express himself. It will probably prevent me from buying and reading the second novel of the series. Bummer.
This was a pretty good read, but sometimes I felt like the main character was Rhambo. Even though there was an occasional casualty among the "white eyes," Squire went through those "redskins" like Samson went through the Philistines with the jawbone of an ass! It was good enough to cause me to buy book 2.
The book was very compelling, I had trouble putting it down, the central character is so well described, and the issues they faced were very well written, it was a book unlike most westerns, it dealt with the hardships of trapping in the mountains of the old west.
This story had a lot of action and a lot of entertaining characters. There was also an extreme amount of violence and it was overly descriptive in some areas. I wasn't too impressed with all the errors, considering the author owns an editing company.
